This spring, a World War II Army Air Force veteran finally returned home to Monongahela — decades after his plane was shot down in a combat mission.
In April, the city turned out in droves to line the streets and honor Sgt. Vernon Hamilton, 19, as the hero he was as he road through town one last time on his way to be buried next to his mother in Monongahela Cemetery.
The Mon Valley already got to witness that part of his journey, but there is still more to see.
WQED will premiere a new documentary, “Homecoming: Sgt. Hamilton’s Long Journey,” 7 p.m. Nov. 6 in the auditorium of the new Ringgold Middle School.
The documentary will have its television premiere on WQED-TV at 8 p.m. Nov. 7.
Hamilton was a 19-year-old Army Air Corpsman whose plane was shot down in March 1945 in a combat mission from France to Germany.
