Gateway chomps McKeesport, 36-7

McKeesport had little trouble in scoring 223 points in its last five games.

But none of those opponents was Gateway, which only allowed 35 points in Class 5A’s Big East Conference this season to  date.

The Gators’ defense stifled the Tigers (7-3, 4-2) by forcing three first-half turnovers and turning those into touchdowns as they defeated McKeesport, 36-7, at George L. Smith Field.

The Gators (8-2, 5-1) limited the hosts to only 45 yards of total offense in the first half as they claimed a hold on second place in the conference.

The early defensive effort by the Gators helped get the lead, but Gateway coach Don Holl was quick to credit the Tigers for their efforts.

“That’s a great football team, they’re a great football program led by a great head coach and coaching staff,” said Holl. “We have battles with them every year. They’re outstanding in a lot of different ways so its a real credit to our defense to find ways to stop them and get some takeaways. More important than getting takeaways is converting them into points.”
