American Legion Post 22 surpasses century mark

Members of American Legion Post 22 in Charleroi will be doing “double duty” when they celebrate Veterans Day at the Veterans Honor Roll at Chamber Plaza.
Not only will the Legionnaires be presenting a traditional program at 10 a.m., Nov. 11, they also will be celebrating their 100th anniversary.
In May 1919, a group of former United States servicemen got together at the Charleroi Savings and Trust building on Fifth Street in Charleroi for the purpose of binding themselves into a veterans organization.
Dr. Edwin McKay was chosen as chairman, William Ludwin as treasurer, and Roy Carson as secretary. A motion was made that an application be made for a charter in the American Legion. The motion passed and a short time later the charter was granted and Charleroi Post 22 became the first American Legion unit in the area. McKay became the first commander.
