For 95 minutes of regulation and overtime, the No. 5 Charleroi and No. 4 Shady Side Academy boys soccer teams couldn’t get a ball in the net in their WPIAL Class 2A quarterfinal playoff game Tuesday at Plum High School.
But less than two minutes into the second overtime period, SSA ended the Cougars’ season when Joey Anania blasted a ball past Charleroi keeper Nick Goodwin for the 1-0 victory and a spot in the WPIAL semifinals.
The teams combined for 42 shots before the second overtime, including 23 on goal. The winning tally was set up by a throw-in from the right side before the Indians’ Sam Farner touched the ball back to Anania, who hammered the shot into the left corner from 15 yards out.
