Charleroi firefighters and borough street workers were joined by state Department of Environmental Protection crews Monday to control a gas leak that has caused gasoline to seep into the ground and into sewer lines in Charleroi.
Over the weekend, fire Chief Robert Whiten Jr. said residents on McKean and Prospect avenues and First Street began reporting a smell of gasoline inside their homes Friday morning. It started with a home near First Street and Prospect Avenue and was followed by similar reports by neighbors throughout the weekend.
The DEP Emergency Response Team began investigating the situation Sunday, when they found “raw gas” in the sewer system near First Street and McKean Avenue.
As of Monday afternoon, Lauren Fraley, community relations coordinator for the state Department of Environmental Protection, said they were in communication with local emergency response departments throughout the weekend and provided information on proper manhole ventilation to disperse the fumes in the sewer system and was still working to identify the source.
