A few groups, including the Donora Historical Society and Smog Museum, are offering a walk through what used to be the Donora Zinc Works, an important location in the historic Donora smog, early next month.

The event, “A Hike Through History: How Donora’s Killer Smog Gave Birth to Cleaner Air,” will take place Nov. 2. The smog museum is collaborating with the Group Against Smog and Pollution, a non-profit advocate for clean air, and Venture Outdoors.

Admission, which can be purchased on ventureoutdoors.org, costs $10 for Venture Outdoor members and $15 for non-members.

The event features a walk through the area that was previously the Donora Zinc Works, the notorious polluter in the 1948 smog incident.

After this tour, the guests will be taken to the smog museum for an informational presentation about the history of the Donora smog.

“It’s a quick overview of how Donora got started, how the Zinc Works got started. Some of the initial effects from that. Why Zinc Works was really so important,” said smog museum volunteer Mark Pawelec. “And then we start to get into some of the pollution aspects of it.”
