Friends of the Monessen Public Library

Attendees at Tuesday’s 28th annual Friends of the Monessen Public Library Luncheon embraced this year’s theme of “Down Memory Lane” and had a groovy, neat and funky time celebrating with friends and library supporters for lunch.

Decorative tables featured everything from disco-themed accessories like rose-colored glasses and 45 records to a real Crosley record player centerpiece. Lots of hippie-themed tables dotted the room at St. Spyridon’s Hellenic Center in Monessen, and ladies called on Woodstock vibes and sported bell bottoms and colorful flower crowns.

There was more than one vintage Monessen-themed table, complete with old school photos, logos, yearbooks and afghans. An old-fashioned kitchen-themed table was decked out with vintage Maxwell House coffee tins and retro carafes the color of buttercream. Board members from Friends designed a “Glitz and Glamour” table that shimmered and shone.

Pam Mahalko sponsored a Hills department store themed table with her friend Mary Louis Persico. The table had a diorama of the department store, and featured tiny cars and a little parking lot for miniature shoppers.

“Everyone remembers going to Hills,” Mahalko said of the now-shuttered store. “Everyone our age, anyhow. It was just an idea, and we thought it was pretty clever.”
