Aly’s Rules sign reminds students about street safety

The family of the late Alyson Higdon joined Mc-Keesport officials Thursday morning for the installation of an “Aly’s Rules” safety sign at the intersection of Eden Park and O’Neil boulevards.

The sign bears a caricature of Alyson, or “Aly” as she was more commonly known among her family and friends. The location of the sign is where Aly, a 14-year-old Founders Hall Middle School student, was killed when she was hit by a truck on March 6, 2014, as she was leaving school grounds.

In the years following her death, family members, McKeesport and White Oak police and other officials have conducted assemblies presenting the Aly’s Rules campaign to McKeesport Area students of all ages.

Through the assemblies, and at community events, the Aly’s Rules team teaches children about looking before they cross the street, how to use a crosswalk, the importance of obeying the orders of a crossing guard, to keep their eyes peeled for cars that are backing up in parking lots or driveways and about bicycle and playground safety.

Aly’s name has become an acronym for “Always Look, Listen and Yield.”
