Local firefighters promote safety

It’s been said many times: “Not every hero wears a cape.”

This week, that statement is especially true as firefighters across the country educate the public during National Fire Prevention Week.

This year’s campaign, “Not Every Hero Wears a Cape. Plan and Practice Your Escape!” works to educate everyone about the small but important actions they can take to keep themselves and those around them safe.

Local fire departments are visiting area schools in an effort to raise awareness about fire prevention.

“We like to go out to the schools and teach the kids because a lot of times the parents are busy with two jobs and they forget about safety,” Charleroi fire Chief Robert Whiten Jr. said. “We give pamphlets out to the kids, who can take them home and remind the parents.”
