Dessel W. Roberts Sr. – Monongahela

Dessel W. Roberts Sr., 85, of Monongahela, Victory Hill, died peacefully in his daughter Renae’s home on Monday, Oct. 7, 2019. Born April 3, 1934, in Gallatin, he was the son of the late Dessel A. and Thelma May McCall Roberts. A Navy veteran, Dessel served in the Korean War stationed on the U.S.S. 753 Destroyer under John R. Pierce. After returning home, he began working as a truck driver, retiring from the former Fox-Wetterau Grocery distributor in 1980. A lifetime member of Monongahela VFW Post 1409, he was an active member of the Victory Hill Social Center. Surviving are a son, Dessel W. Roberts Jr. of Monongahela, Victory Hill; two daughters and sons-in-law, Dorae and Jack Smith and Renae and Craig Taylor, all of Victory Hill; two grandsons, Dalton Smith and Sean and wife Christine Taylor; and a great-grandson, Jacob Taylor. Preceding him in death were his wife, Elizabeth Roberts, who died April 22, 2017; three brothers, James, Frank and Everett Roberts; and two sisters, Maryann Weigel and Dolly Shea. Friends will be received at MARSHALL MARRA FUNERAL HOME, 216 Chess St., Monongahela, 724-258-6767, marshallmarrafuneralhome.com, from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 10, 2019, with the Rev. Raymond DiCammillo officiating. Interment will follow in Mon Valley Memorial Park, Donora, with the Mon Valley Honor Guard and Firing Squad.
