Area family hosts child of exchange student from 1991

A Mon Valley family who has hosted many exchange students through the Uniontown Rotary Exchange Program over the years has “children” and “family” all over the world.

Donna Vesley says being a host family has brought thousands of memories — and tons of love — over the years. The experience was brought full circle when the teenage daughter of one of her former exchange students came for a months-long visit over the summer.

Vesley hosted Christophe Collard as a 19-year-old from Belgium in 1991. His daughter, Manon, 17, came to the United States 28 years later to stay with the Vesleys.

“He stayed with us for about five months until he graduated from Geibel High School in 1992,” Vesley said. “We have hosted more than 25 kids over the years, but admittedly, Christophe was very special to us.”
