After the 70th anniversary of the Donora smog last year, the community is still working to keep the memory alive with this year’s 10th annual Donora Smog 5K Run/Walk.
To remember the tragic event and the progress made as a result, the Donora Smog Commemorative committee will continue the 5K for one more year on Oct. 26.
Smog enveloped Donora for five days in 1948 and killed at least 26 people and sickened thousands as the result of trapped fumes from the Zinc Works plant and steel mills during a temperature inversion. The smog hung over town for five days in late October and thickened as the days went on.
The tragedy helped pave the way for research involving environmental safety concerns and air cleanliness. Eleven years ago, the Donora Smog Museum, located at the corner of Sixth Street and McKean Avenue, opened to provide education to visitors.
