The Elizabeth Forward girls volleyball team used great teamwork Thursday night and in doing so, knocked off rival Belle Vernon in Section 3 of Class 3A. The Leopards came out with a great effort early, but ran into Mia Vuick’s serving prowess.

The senior rattled off five straight points to break open a tight first game. Then Vuick scored points for the Warriors on 11 consecutive serves in game two. She ended the night with seven aces.

“I think it was a great team effort tonight, there wasn’t one person who had a whole bunch of kills,” said EF coach Kameron Smith. “We did a great job serving hard, did a great job passing and had very few passing errors.”

Before Vuick took over on the serve, Belle Vernon (3-7, 4-8) was playing very well and with a lot of energy. A sea-saw first game had Elizabeth Forward (7-3, 8-3) ahead 11-10, head coach Jonathan Barr noted that a few costly errors during those serves let the game get away.

“We came into tonight knowing we could play with them,” said Barr. “They believed it going in which is why I think we started so strong. After those first 15 points we had made five errors in a row and unfortunately we kind of let ourselves down.”
