Mildred E. Batiste, 99, of Monongahela, formerly of Monessen and Belle Vernon, went to be with the Lord on Thursday, Oct. 3, 2019, at Monongahela Valley Hospital. A daughter of the late Viljo Laatu and Anna Sophie Piisila Laatu, she was born in Monessen on July 20, 1920. After graduating from Monessen High School, Mildred worked at Johnson’s Restaurant before her marriage to Paul Batiste. She modeled clothing for Kaufmann’s in Pittsburgh and Eisenberg’s of Monessen, appearing regularly in their ads in The Valley Independent. Mildred resided at The Residence at Hilltop in Monongahela for the last 15 years. Mildred was a dedicated wife and loving mother with a gentle and kind soul. She is survived by a brother, William Laatu of Monongahela; three sons, William Batiste (Virginia) of Honolulu, Hawaii, Paul Batiste (Christine) of McKees Rocks and Brian Batiste (Danee) of Fulshear, Texas; numerous nephews and nieces and four grandchildren. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband and dance partner, Paul Batiste; and her brother Donald Laatu. Friends will be received from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, Oct. 5, at FERGUSON FUNERAL HOME AND CREMATORY INC., 700 Broad Avenue, Belle Vernon, 724-929-5300. www.FergusonFuneralHomeandCrematory.com. A blessing service will be held at noon Saturday in the funeral home with Father Michael Crookston officiating. Entombment will follow in Grandview Cemetery, Monessen.
