The safety concern that led to the closure of the Elizabeth Bridge was taken care of in less than 24 hours.
PennDOT District 11 issued a press release late Friday afternoon announcing that drivers would be allowed back on the bridge starting at 6 p.m.
The bridge, which carries Route 51 over the Monongahela River and connects Elizabeth borough to West Elizabeth, was shut down around 10 p.m. Thursday. The cause was a failed temporary structural support bracket that was being utilized for hanger cable replacements.
In the release, PennDOT stated that its crews worked around the clock with the contractor and consulting engineers “to design and install a secondary hanger system in the location of the concern.”
