Pennsylvania’s auditor general determined the Monessen police and firefighter pension plans were in complete compliance with recommendations for the department’s audit report for the period of Jan. 1, 2015, to Dec. 31, 2016.
The review was closed Sept. 11 by Auditor General Eugene A. DePasquale, citing there was “cause to withdraw.”
DePasquale’s conclusion comes after months-long turmoil between council members and absentee Mayor Matt Shorraw over his allegations of fraud related to the pensions.
“What it means to me is that officially, the auditor general has put a stake in it and it’s over,” Councilman and acting Mayor Anthony Orzechowski said. “It was over a long time ago. This council took it upon itself to solve the problem. We didn’t do anything illegal and we didn’t do anything out of the ordinary; we simply made do with what was left to us from the prior administration.”
