Friday night’s matchup between Thomas Jefferson and Belle Vernon Area was undoubtedly one that high school football fans circled on their calendars months prior to the start of the new season.
Pitted against each other were two of the top teams in Class 4A and a pair of schools that have developed an interesting rivalry over the last few years.
The Big 8 Conference showdown didn’t disappoint as the Jaguars held on to a slim 14-7 lead after three quarters of play before exploding for 20 points in the fourth on a 4-yard touchdown run by Shane Stump, his second of the game, and rushing scores of 9 and 8 yards by Deron VanBibber.
With a 34-7 win over BVA, Thomas Jefferson certainly put itself in a good spot atop the conference standings, sharing first place with West Mifflin through three games.
The Jaguars proved, on this night, to be the better team and is among the cream of the crop in Class 4A.
