Friday’s game ended the way every high school football player dreams about — with a game-winning score as time expired.
Serra Catholic woke up on the wrong side of that dream in a 30-27 loss at South Side Beaver’s Richard J. Ashcroft Sports Complex.
Trailing by a touchdown with 6:31 to play, the Eagles drove 41 yards in 10 plays to tie the game at 27. Ray Holmes rushed in from six yards out to make it 27-26 before Joey Folino booted the extra point to even the score.
South Side got the ball with 2:28 left to play and marched down field in a two-minute drill, using a pair of 20-plus yard plays to move into field goal range. Rams kicker Noah Prince drove a 19-yard field goal between the posts as time expired to decide the game.
“We fought to the end, and that’s all I want them to do,” Serra Catholic head coach Jose Regus said. “My guys stayed in there; attitudes were great. We went down to the wire. It hurts that way when you lose it at the last second, hurts for 24 hours and you move on to next week.
