Belle Vernon Area girls soccer coach Tracy Lovett watched contently as her team made significant progress while playing in the third annual Paul Sasko Kickoff Classic this past weekend at James Weir Stadium.

Despite suffering a 4-2 loss to Class 4A Connellsville on Saturday, the Leopards, who received goals from Danielle Engstrom and Izzy Laurita, showed improvement from a 6-0 scrimmage loss to the Falcons last week.

“I was pleased with our progression,” said Lovett, who is in her first season as Leopards coach. “Last week was a little discouraging, but we came out stronger and came out faster (on Saturday). It was 4-2, but it felt much more even.”

Lovett’s only concern regarding her team’s play Saturday was its inability to cash in on key scoring opportunities.
