When the Charleroi Little Great Race takes place next Saturday, four-month-old Layla Hynes will have just completed her eighth round of chemotherapy — and she will have hundreds of supporters running and walking in her honor.
Layla, the daughter of Adam Hynes and Alena Olson of Bentleyville, was born a happy — but not healthy — baby on April 3, a few weeks before her expected due date.
Alena was having a healthy and uncomplicated pregnancy, but at eight months she felt like something wasn’t right.
“It’s very hard to explain,” Alena said. “I just felt like something was wrong. I was at an appointment and I said I wanted an ultrasound, no matter how it had to happen. When they kept me, I knew I was right.”
