The Environmental Integrity Project, on behalf of Philadelphia-based Clean Air Council, has filed a lawsuit against U.S. Steel “for continually failing to report releases of hundreds of thousands of pounds of hydrogen sulfide, benzene and other hazardous pollutants into the air from three of its Mon Valley Works plants.”
Both EIP and Clean Air Council are nonprofit environmental organizations. The lawsuit was filed Monday in U.S. District Court for the Western District of Pennsylvania.
According to language in court documents, the pollution releases started in December 2018 following a Christmas Eve fire at Clairton Coke Works and lasted for more than 100 days.
EIP and the Clean Air Council allege that U.S. Steel violated the federal Superfund law, also known as the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation and Liability Act (CERCLA), by failing to report the releases to the National Response Center.
