Mixup leaves St. Sebastian students in Monessen without buses

The families of Monessen children attending St. Sebastian Regional Catholic School needed to dust off their problem-solving skills Monday when they learned that bus service would not be available for the first day of school.

Frank LoPresti of Monessen said he had intended to drive his daughter to school the first day, but expected her to take the bus home. That was until he got notice from the school’s administration over the weekend that there wouldn’t be a bus for the 24 students from Monessen Monday. LoPresti said he had to scramble to arrange a way home for his daughter and was waiting to hear how transportation would be addressed for the rest of the week.

St. Sebastian’s principal, Carole Aiello, said parents, grandparents and neighbors were pressed into service to get children to school Monday. Aiello explained that the situation resulted from a breakdown in communications.

“Daily attempts to contact Monessen School District leadership and PA Coach Line to solidify the bus schedule for our students over the last two weeks were unsuccessful,” Aiello said in a prepared release.
