Cal U grant will aid in combating opioid crisis

California University of Pennsylvania has received more than $1 million to benefit students who plan to work in fields related to the opioid crisis.

The $1.3 million grant, administered through the Health Resources Administration Opioid Workforce Expansion program, provides 27 stipends of $10,000 each to graduate students in the fields of social work, school counseling and clinical mental health counseling.

It’s not the first time Cal U has received such a grant. In 2017, the university received a four-year, $1.9 million grant to help students with field placements and to increase the services provided to schools and communities in medically underserved areas.

Dr. Sheri Boyle, chair of the Social Work Department, said the grant is important because it not only helps the greater good, but directly aids university students and the community.
