Charleroi girls learning on the fly

Over the last several years, the Charleroi girls soccer team has been able to do what they can with what they’ve had.
Numbers have dropped in recent years with the Cougars having 14 girls on their roster two years ago and just 13 last season when they went 7-7 overall and 7-5 in Section 2-A play.
This year, Charleroi will deal with the same lack of numbers; however, progress has been made with 15 girls listed on the roster.
“It’s a great sign that we have girls coming out to try a new sport in high school,” Charleroi head coach Traci Fleming said, adding that a majority of her players are new to the sport. “I’ve been spoiled here because I came in under coach (Jim) Rue and I had those same girls that had been playing since they were eight years old and they were soccer-oriented kids from soccer-oriented families. We went to Highmark Stadium (for the WPIAL championship game in 2015) and we went to states. Those are all bonuses and we don’t have those goals set, but watching these girls improve from week to week is another kind of bonus for me.”
