In 1969, a 14-year-old Eric Bugaile attended the burial of a time capsule in Chess Park at the close of Monongahela’s bicentennial celebration. At the last minute, he slipped something inside.
Those in charge of the ceremony said there was some extra room and asked the people in attendance if they had anything to add.
Bugaile asked if a flag was included in the time capsule and when he learned there wasn’t one, he purchased a Monongahela city flag from a vendor in Chess Park.
Bugaile, who now lives in Harrisburg, took the flag off the pole it was attached to and folded it up to go inside the capsule.
