Months and months of planning came to fruition Thursday morning when the Monongahela 250th anniversary celebration officially kicked off in Chess Park.
“We are so excited for these four days that allow us to spend time together to pay tribute to this great place,” Laura Magone, the president of the Monongahela 250 nonprofit organization, told a crowd of hundreds.
Her speech was much like a love letter to her hometown.
Standing in the gazebo festooned with patriotic bunting, Magone looked over the crowd and smiled.
“I have to tell you from up here how moving it is to look out and see this gathering,” Magone said. “For this celebration of our 250th, we chose the theme of Building a Nation.”
