Local teams ready for ‘Heat week’

The week that most high school football players dread gets under way today: heat acclimation conditioning.
It’s a week of work teams put in without hitting, as mandated by the PIAA. Schools are mandated to have at least three hours a day for three days working out to get in shape and manage the summer heat.
Players can wear helmets and shoulder pads the first two days and full uniforms the third day, but while they will do plenty of running and agility skills, there won’t be any live hitting until summer camp officially opens next week.
Teams who opt to work out longer than three hours must give their players a two-hour break before doing any further conditioning after the three hour sessions.
