In the 2011 film “Moneyball,” actor Brad Pitt stars as Oakland Athletics General Manager Billy Beane, who embarks on an effort to form a competitive team during the 2002 MLB season.
Considered, at one time, a highly-touted prospect, Beane is shown during the movie impressing scouts with his powerful swing and imposing arm strength before eventually enduring struggles once he reaches the big leagues.
At one point, a scout tells Beane, “We’re all told at some point in time that we can no longer play the children’s game, we just don’t know when that’s gonna be. Some of us are told at 18, some of us are told at 40, but we’re all told.”
Belle Vernon Area and California University of Pennsylvania graduate Parker Lynn easily relates to that quote and being told it’s time to embark on something new.
A former catcher for the Leopards and Vulcans, Lynn was aware that his playing career wouldn’t last forever, especially after his junior year of high school when he lost vision and depth perception following a collision with a teammate.
