Following a hang-up call to 911, Monessen police were dispatched to the Foodland parking lot at 701 Donner Ave. just before midnight Saturday for a report of woman who was shot in the head.

Monessen police Lt. Dave Yuhasz said emergency dispatchers were able to get back in touch with the caller, who said his girlfriend pointed a gun at him before turning it on herself and pulling the trigger.

The victim, who was not identified, was taken to Monongahela Valley Hospital by ambulance before being transported by medical helicopter to UPMC Mercy Hospital in Pittsburgh.

“The incident is still under investigation, but it was obviously some sort of domestic dispute,” Yuhasz said. “We do have video surveillance and gun-shot residue to be submitted to the crime lab for testing.”

Monessen police were assisted at the scene by Mon Valley Emergency Medical Services and Monessen Fire Department No. 1.
