Union Cleaners held off a relentless Farmers Insurance squad to capture a 78-69 victory in J. Budd Grebb Memorial Summer Basketball League boys division action Tuesday night at the Mechanic Street Playground in California.
Farmers Insurance (3-4) trailed by as many as 18 points in the second half before coming back to cut its deficit to 68-67 with 3:35 remaining in the game.
However, Union Cleaners (4-3) didn’t allow Farmers to complete its triumphant attempt at a comeback, finishing the contest on a 10-2 run to claim the win and put an end to its short two-game losing streak.
“Farmers is a good team. They’re well coached, they have a lot of good players and we knew they weren’t going to go away,” Union Cleaners head coach TJ Kurutz said. “I kept calling timeouts late to make sure we were all on the same page. It’s not an easy win and I give our guys a lot of credit for sticking it through.”
