Several schools in the Mon Valley are being awarded fresh food grants, state Rep. Austin Davis and state Sen. Jim Brewster, both McKeesport Democrats, announced Monday.
The funding was awarded through the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program. The program’s goals, according to Davis, are to help create healthy school environments by providing healthier food choices, expanding the variety of fruits and vegetables available, increasing fruit and vegetable consumption and positively impacting students’ present and future health.
“The health of our youth is paramount,” Davis said. “This funding is going to make a huge difference in the respective school districts that were awarded funding today, and I’m encouraged to see school districts across the Mon Valley taking the initiative to provide students with healthier food options so that they can succeed inside and outside of the classroom.”
