A property leasing agreement involving a local church  was approved Monday in Elizabeth, but not before a heated exchange in which board president Andrew Kuzma accused Commissioner Joanne Beckowitz of selling her soul to the devil.

They were on opposite sides of the issue as the Spirit Chapel Church sought the leasing agreement to create a community center.

The next step is to get the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources to sign off on the arrangement.

The clash between Kuzma and Beckowitz came about after back-and-forth discussion concerning economic and ethical questions related to the lease agreement. Beckowitz claimed Kuzma only supported the effort because he attends Spirit Chapel Church.
