George “Alvin” Helfer stood out during his time at Monongahela High School.
He stood 6-8 and weighed 250 pounds. While his stature was imposing, his personality was larger than life.
His athletic prowess helped the 1929 graduate earn a football scholarship to Washington & Jefferson College, but it was his personality and sports knowledge that will see him honored posthumously July 20.
Al Helfer is this year’s recipient of the Ford C. Frick Award for broadcasters, presented by the National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, N.Y. Other recipients of the award include Bob Costas last year, Bob Uecker (2003), Harry Caray (1989), Bob Prince (1986) and Vin Scully (1982).
