Early risers were greeted Thursday morning with flash-flood warnings from the National Weather Service of Pittsburgh for parts of Allegheny and Westmoreland counties.
An inch of rain had already fallen in the area by 8:20 a.m., and downpours continued on and off throughout the day. The NWS advised motorists to exercise caution in flooded areas with the message, “turn around, don’t drown.”
Roads across the region were closed by the heavy rains.
Allegheny County Emergency Services reported that flooding on the McKeesport side of the Mansfield Bridge caused city police and public works crews to close the bridge for several hours Thursday morning and into the afternoon as water surged down the ramp and shot out of manholes and sewer grates.
