Connellsville’s start to the Fayette Legion baseball playoffs was delayed more than once, but the long rest didn’t slow the team down any, as they took a commanding lead early in Friday’s second-round contest and held on for a 9-1 win over visiting Belle Vernon.

Second-seeded Connellsville, which earned a first-round bye in the double-elimination tournament, posted seven runs in the bottom of the first, keyed by two-run doubles from Cade Warrick and Jake Frick. Collyn Flynn hit an RBI single in the inning, and Brant Bonadio singled. Kyle Ridley drove in a run on the way to the quick 7-0 lead.

“The kids hit the ball well. Having those couple days off and getting a little rest was good for them,” Connellsville manager Joe Bonadio said. “They got their energy back.”

Belle Vernon, meanwhile, was sluggish out of the gate, unable to muster a hit through the first three innings of play.
