Steve French picked up reading at a young age. By age 9 or 10, he was already reading about biblical and Roman history, among other topics. Soon enough, he became interested in the Civil War.

“Right here where I live is the border between the north and south, right on the Potomac River,” French said. “Growing up, a lot of battlefields around here and so on. Just always had an interest in it.”

French will be at this month’s California University of Pennsylvania Civil War Roundtable to discuss McNeill’s Rangers, an independent Confederate military force. The event is set for 7 p.m. Thursday at Kara Alumni House.

French, 66, an eastern West Virginia resident who retired after 38 years of teaching  middle school, has written a multitude of books and articles, largely about the Civil War.
