Belle Vernon waited until the right time to play one of its best games of the season.
Opening the Fayette County American Legion League postseason tournament against Farmington Monday at the DiVirgilio Complex, Belle Vernon rolled to a tidy, impressive 5-0 win.
In a game that took only one hour, 26 minutes to play, BV (12-6) received solid pitching, good defense and timely hitting to stay in the winners’ bracket of the double-elimination field.
Pitcher Jake Rathway went six-plus innings, shutting down Farmington (7-10) by scattering six harmless singles with four strikeouts and a walk. The only reason he did not complete the tidy game was BV manager Tom Hartman pulled him after giving up a leadoff single in the seventh because of his pitch count.
