A White Oak family was caught in a 7.1 magnitude earthquake Friday night while vacationing in Las Vegas.
Brian Dzurenda, baseball and cross country coach at Serra Catholic High School, was walking through the shopping center of Caesars Palace with his wife, Meredith, and two daughters, Ava and Mia, when he saw chandeliers and other light fixtures begin to shake and felt the ground shifting beneath him.
“I thought an earthquake would be a more violent feeling, but it felt more like being on a cruise ship,” Dzurenda said. “It felt like the ground was swinging from side to side.”
Dzurenda, along with other vacationing onlookers, took videos and photos while the quake was happening, gently shaking the lights. His family took shelter during the tremors, and Dzurenda said they were relieved when they subsided.
“Everybody was very much freaking out and taking pictures, including me,” he said of the incident.
