As he finished the first round of the 119th Western Pennsylvania Golf Association Amateur Championship on Monday, Angus McHolme had a reason to feel good about his performance.
McHolme, who graduated from Elizabeth Forward last month, shot a 4-over 75 in the first round at the Oakmont Country Club before enduring struggles in Tuesday’s second round, shooting a 9-over 80 to sneak into the final round with the final qualifying spot.
“It was almost like a switch flipped over night after day one. I hit the ball great the first day, but didn’t score very well. It was only my second time around the course so I was very happy with the round I played,” McHolme said. “The final two rounds were a struggle. Lots of bad breaks but a lot of bad shots as well led to those two rounds. I was very happy to make my first cut at the West Penn Open, though, especially after the day two grind.”
Sitting at a 13-over par after two rounds, McHolme shot another 9-over 80 during Wednesday’s final round to finish tied for 32nd.
