Monessen couple will stand trial on animal abuse charges

A Monessen couple accused of abandoning two pit bulls in their home without food and water for an extended period of time will stand trial in Westmoreland County Court.

Daniel W. Brewer III, 34, and Karen Brewer, 33, of Linden Avenue, waived their rights to preliminary hearings Friday on two counts each of aggravated cruelty to animals causing serious bodily injury, animal cruelty and animal neglect.

On June 17, Monessen police officer Chris Gray found the dogs locked inside a bedroom after a family member went to the police station to report concerns that no one was taking care of the animals.

Neighbors told police they had not seen Brewer in weeks.
