If this season taught Serra Catholic head coach Brian Dzurenda anything, it’s to never discount your team.
Dzurenda, who has been at the helm of the Eagles’ baseball program for two decades, helped guide a young Serra Catholic team to a season many didn’t expect it to have.
With only one senior starter and a few junior contributors, Dzurenda’s bunch exceeded expectations, earning a share of its section title before making appearances in the WPIAL and PIAA championship games.
“It was a testament to all the hard work the kids put in first and foremost, but it was kind of a cinderella season for us,” said Dzurenda, who has been named the Mon Valley Independent-BeeGraphix Baseball Coach of the Year.
