Military veterans will be honored during “Honor our Vets” day at North Belle Vernon Community Bank Park Sunday.
The third annual event, which will be held from 2 to 6 p.m., is sponsored by the North Belle Vernon Parks and Recreation Commission.
“If it wasn’t for the vets, we wouldn’t be able to do what we want to do. We owe them everything we have today,” said RJ Sokol, a North Belle Vernon councilman and chairman of the Parks and Recreation Commission. “One day isn’t enough to honor our vets, but when we have the opportunity to do so, we will do it.”
Special guest appearances will be made by Navy veteran Bob McPherson and Belle Vernon Area graduate Anthony Bertram, a West Point Academy Appointee.
“Its not every day that you have someone appointed to West Point from your local school’s graduating class,” Sokol said of Bertram. “We’ll have him make a few words on what prompted him to go down this road.”
In addition to honoring those, past and present, who sacrifice their lives for the freedom of others, this weekend’s event will feature live country music by The Stonehorse Band.
Food and drinks will also be available. Snacks will be provided to veterans at no charge.
The public is welcome to attend. Extra parking will be available at St. Sebastian’s Church.
