Mid Mon Valley All Sports Hall of Fame: Small but mighty, Rawls shined for Cougars
For the MV Independent
Lew Rawls wasn’t just one on the best running backs in the Mon Valley. The Charleroi football star was one of the best in the state.
He wasn’t the biggest player in stature, just under 5-7 and 144 pounds, but he was one of the biggest playmakers to ever don the red and black.
A three-year letterman during his time at Charleroi, Rawls became the first runner to accumulate over 1,000 yards in a season in his junior year. He finished with 1,039 yards and led the Big 9 Conference with 79 points.
He added five more points in his senior season and gashed defenses for over 1,000 yards on the ground again. He found the end zone 12 times.
He was named All-WPIAL and honorable mention All-State. His most memorable game came when the Cougars bested cross-river rival Monessen, 13-7, with Rawls rushing for over 200 yards.
