“We’re just out here meeting our neighbors and having a good time.”

That’s how McKeesport Recreation Board member Cheryl Cotter described the atmosphere of Good Neighbor Day on Friday.

For the past 56 years, McKeesport has invited residents, business owners and community leaders to converge upon Fifth Avenue in the downtown business district “to get to know their neighbors,” according to Mayor Michael Cherepko.

Dozens of vendors lined the road Friday and offered informative pamphlets and handouts, sold food, clothes and jewelry, played games and made arts and crafts with children, adults and families who came for the festivities.

State Rep. Austin Davis, D-McKeesport, was among those walking around Fifth Avenue trying to meet his neighbors. He talked with constituents about their concerns within his district and invited them to stop by a booth his office had at the celebration to learn about state-run programs that they might benefit from.
