Nicholas Matesich – New Eagle
Nicholas Matesich, 94, of New Eagle, passed away peacefully on Saturday, June 8, 2019, in Cambridge Hillside Personal Care Home, North Charleroi. Born Nov. 24, 1924, in Lawrence, Pa., he was the son of John and Agnes Grdic Matesich. Mr. Matesich served in the U.S. Navy aboard the U.S.S. Sheridan from 1943-1946 during World War II and re-enlisted in the U.S. Coast Guard from 1952-1962, serving during the Korean War Era. He worked as a deck hand for New York Marine Towing & Transportation until his retirement. He enjoyed working in his garden and telling stories about growing up during the Great Depression. Surviving are two daughters, Deborah Panza of Canonsburg and Donna Myers of Monongahela; four grandchildren, Von, Jessica and Kayla Myers and Jeff (Lyndsey) Lytle; and six great-grandchildren, Jared, Jonathan, Delaney, Cameron, Aiden and Brooklynn; along with several nieces and nephews. Preceding him in death was his wife, Dorothy L. Rinard Matesich, who died Nov. 11, 2009; and five brothers, Stephen, Thomas, Michael, John and Joseph Matesich; and a sister, Anna Matesich, who died at birth. Memorial contributions can be made to the Washington City Mission, (Patriot House) 84 West Wheeling St., Washington, PA 15301. Funeral services will be private and interment will be held in Monongahela Cemetery with military honors conducted by the Mon Valley Honor Guard and Firing Squad.
