Edwin John Popelas – Roscoe

Edwin John Popelas, 90, of Roscoe, passed peacefully on June 12, 2019, surrounded by family. He was born on June 10, 1929, in Stockdale, to the late Andrew and Helen Ruzicka Popelas. Edwin served in the United States Army during the Korean War. He retired from Wheeling Pittsburgh Steel Corp., Allenport, after 45 years of employment. He was a member of the Roscoe American Legion Post No. 801, Roscoe, Slovak Club, Knights of Columbus Council No. 956 Charleroi and Belle Vernon Moose Club. He also served God as an Eucharistic Minister, volunteer and an active member of his church community at the former St. Joseph Catholic Church in Roscoe for many years and was an avid gardener. Edwin is survived by his wife of 68 years, Mary Alice Moluski Popelas; their children and spouses, Patricia Guerra, Edwin Jr. and Kathy Popelas, Carol and Vincent Babich, Ronald and Lori Popelas, Michael and Dawn Popelas; 13 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister, Joan Zoppetti, of Stockdale. He was preceded in death by his brothers, George and Andrew Popelas; and his son-in-law, James Guerra. Visitation will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, June 14, 2019, at MELENYZER FUNERAL HOMES & CREMATION SERVICES INC. 1008 Furlong Ave., Roscoe. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated 10 a.m. Saturday, June 15, 2019, at St. Sebastian Catholic Church, Belle Vernon, with the Rev. Elmer Alforque officiating. Interment will follow at Sacred Heart Cemetery, Carroll Township. Military rites will be accorded by the United States Army Honor Guard and the Roscoe American Legion Post 801.
