McKeesport Area School District learned recently that it will be receiving grant money from the state for after-school programs through the Cohort 10 program.
State Sen. Jim Brewster and state Rep. Austin Davis, both McKeesport Democrats, announced on behalf of the Pennsylvania Department of Education that the district is getting $165,160 in 21st Century Learning Center grants.
The 21st Century program aims to support the creation of community learning centers that provide academic enrichment opportunities during non-school hours for children, particularly students who attend high-poverty and low-performing Title I schools, according to Davis.
The program helps students meet state and local student standards in core academic subjects, such as reading, math and science; offers students a broad array of enrichment activities that can complement their regular academic programs; and offers literacy and other educational services to the families of participating children.
