Latte event promotes White Oak animal shelter

White Oak Animal Safe Haven founder Ina Jean Marton joked Friday night that a group of dogs and their “forever families” had “a latte fun” at the “Yappy Happy Hour.”

Marton and a group of board members and volunteers got together in the White Oak municipal building parking lot to serve free “dog lattes” to any dog who stopped by. The lattes didn’t actually contain any coffee or espresso; they were made with dog-friendly whipped cream mixed in with dog treats and served in a miniature coffee cup.

The lattes were the creation of Marion McFeely and her daughter, Morgan. The family owns a small business in Irwin called McFeely’s Gourmet Chocolate, which does exactly what the name implies — make handcrafted chocolates. The business also makes dog-friendly ice cream, which was on sale during the event along with chocolate and “people-friendly ice cream truck favorites,” according to Marion McFeely.

The McFeelys said they will be donating a portion of the money they raised to WOASH, a nonprofit no-kill shelter located on Lincoln Way. Marion said to pay attention to her business’ Facebook page because she is hoping to plan another dog latte event for later in the summer.
