Three Mon Valley swimming spots have failed water-quality tests after strands of E. coli were discovered.
The Youghiogheny Riverkeeper/Mountain Watershed Association, a Melcroft environmental organization, announced that portions of the Youghiogheny River in McKeesport, at Battlefield Park in the Boston section of Elizabeth Township and Smithton Beach near the South Huntingdon Township border with Rostraver Township are contaminated.
The Mountain Watershed Association each year tests water at popular swimming spots weekly between May 1 and Sept. 30 in the southwestern Pennsylvania region to look for bacteria that can cause foodborne and waterborne illnesses.
Eleven of 14 locations tested by the association failed.
