Elizabeth Borough’s plans to turn Plum Street into a temporary town square this summer are full speed ahead.

Last month, council unanimously approved closing the roadway to traffic from June 1 to Aug. 31, supporting the Elizabeth Area Development Corp.’s goal of creating a community gathering place.

Plum Street has become a popular destination for activities hosted by the EADC, including the annual Blanc en Plum fundraiser dinner and the summer-long concert series that features musicians every Thursday from 6 to 9 p.m. The concert series is set to begin its 10th season this summer.

On Tuesday, borough solicitor Krisha DiMascio said that although the 92-day closure is slated to begin Saturday, the EADC may not carry out the total shutdown until June 6, the night of the season’s first concert.
